A UK study finds Black children and other marginalized groups are severely underrepresented as main characters in children’s books. The Centre for Literacy in Primary Education’s survey shows only 7% of 2023 books featured racially minoritized protagonists, down from 14% in 2022. Black characters accounted for just 6.8% of main characters, and over half were written by white authors.
